Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Mark Aaron Mayo, aged 24, tragically lost his life on March 24, 2014, while serving aboard the USS Mahan at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia. Mayo was shot and killed by a civilian intruder who had managed to board the ship. The incident began when the intruder, later identified as Jeffrey Tyrone Savage, used fraudulent credentials to gain access to the base and then proceeded to the pier where the USS Mahan was docked.
