In the quiet residential neighborhood of the 800 block of Jerome Avenue in Norfolk, Virginia, a burst of gunfire shattered the night on January 9, 2022. When police officers arrived at the scene around 10:55 p.m., they discovered a grim tableau. Inside a home, 28-year-old Keith D. Winstead was found suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other individuals, 27-year-old Trevon C.
Moore, a Black / African American male, and a 30-year-old woman, were also found with gunshot wounds.
Both Moore and the female victim were quickly transported to a local hospital for medical attention. Initially, their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. However, Trevon Moore's condition took a turn for the worse, and he succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The female victim, later identified as Shakeithya S. Cooper, also passed away from her injuries in March of the same year, with the medical examiner ruling her death a homicide due to delayed complications from the shooting.
Investigators determined that the shots had been fired into the residence from outside, piercing a window in what appeared to be a targeted attack. The triple homicide sent shockwaves through the Norfolk community. Despite the passage of time, no arrests have been made in connection with the killings of Trevon Moore, Keith D. Winstead, and Shakeithya S. Cooper. The Norfolk Police Department's homicide detectives are still actively investigating the case and have urged anyone with information to come forward. The motive behind the deadly shooting remains unclear, and the suspect or suspects are still at large, leaving the victims' families waiting for justice.
