On a Friday evening in Norfolk, Virginia, tragedy struck in the 900 block of Trice Terrace. It was there that 44-year-old Hardley R. Henry, a male resident of Norfolk, was found suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds. The call came in to police at approximately 8:40 p.m. on October 12, 2018, reporting a man possibly injured by gunfire.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered Henry gravely wounded.
Medics quickly transported him to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he succumbed to them at the hospital. The incident was immediately investigated as a homicide by the Norfolk police.
In the hours that followed the shooting, the preliminary investigation led detectives to a suspect. A short time later, police took 28-year-old Akeem J. Shelford into custody. Authorities announced that they were not searching for any other individuals in connection with the shooting.
Akeem J. Shelford was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He was taken to the Norfolk City Jail where he was held without bond. While an arrest was made, investigators did not publicly release a motive or the specific circumstances that led to the fatal encounter between Henry and Shelford.
