In the early evening of January 3, 2018, in Norfolk, Virginia, 44-year-old Lanxter L. Kuykendall was found lying on the ground in a parking lot of an apartment complex located at 423 E. Little Creek Road. Emergency dispatch received multiple calls around 6:00 p.m. regarding a man down. Upon their arrival, police officers discovered that Kuykendall had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to identify a suspect. Three months after the incident, 24-year-old Donovan Robinson was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in connection with Kuykendall's death. At the time of his arrest, Robinson was located in a correctional facility in North Carolina and was subsequently extradited to Virginia to face the charges. Officials did not immediately release a motive for the shooting.
In February 2020, the legal proceedings against Donovan Robinson concluded. He pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter. As a result of his plea agreement, Robinson was sentenced to 15 years in prison, with six of those years suspended. This left him with a total of nine years of active prison time to serve for the killing of Lanxter Kuykendall.
