On a tragic Friday afternoon, June 4, 2021, the life of 37-year-old Calvin A. Durham II was cut short in Norfolk, Virginia. The fatal encounter unfolded at the Kappatal Cuts barbershop on East Brambleton Avenue around 12:30 p.m. and was preceded by a dispute that had reportedly begun on social media. The disagreement escalated when Durham confronted 42-year-old Fareed Nelson-Luckett regarding a Facebook post.
The argument, which started in the barbershop's parking lot, quickly turned into a physical altercation. Barbers from the shop intervened and separated the two men, bringing Nelson-Luckett inside while Durham remained outside. However, the conflict was far from over. Durham later entered the barbershop to confront Nelson-Luckett again. A second struggle ensued, during which Durham was shot. Authorities later stated that according to Nelson-Luckett's testimony, he took a firearm from Durham and shot him with it.
Both men sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for medical attention. Calvin A. Durham II succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Nelson-Luckett was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and was subsequently taken into custody upon his release. He was charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
The legal proceedings that followed culminated in a jury trial in July 2023. After approximately four hours of deliberation, the jury found Fareed Nelson-Luckett guilty of the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter and the use of a firearm. He was later sentenced to five years in prison for the death of Calvin Anthony Durham II. The case served as a somber reminder of how online disputes can escalate into real-world violence with devastating consequences.
