On a spring evening in Norfolk, Virginia, the life of 20-year-old Jalen C. Barnhill was tragically cut short. On April 20, 2018, police responded to a call for a gunshot disturbance in the 7900 block of Thompson Road. Arriving at the scene, they discovered Barnhill outside, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to a local hospital, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries.
A former football player at Granby High School, Barnhill was remembered for his athletic abilities, having played as a wide receiver and safety.
The investigation into the shooting led Norfolk Police detectives to identify a suspect. Ten days after the fatal incident, on April 30, 2018, authorities announced the arrest of 28-year-old Tyree S. Holt. He was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Following his arrest, Holt was held in the Norfolk City Jail without bond. The case proceeded, and on August 9, 2018, the charges against him were certified to a grand jury.
