Jahari George, a 20-year-old male engineering student at Norfolk State University, was fatally shot on September 2, 2023. The incident occurred near the Norfolk, Virginia campus while he was sitting in his girlfriend's car. Friends and family described George as a diligent and creative individual who had been an honor roll student. He was just four months away from his 21st birthday and was parked outside his dorm at the time of the shooting.
The investigation into the shooting led to
the arrest of three men in November 2023: 21-year-old Marquas L. Gregg, 18-year-old Camari L. Warren, and 18-year-old Cameron C. Brown. They were all charged with second-degree murder, conspiracy, and use of a firearm. Gregg was apprehended in Richmond, while Warren and Brown were taken into custody in Portsmouth by a team of law enforcement officers including the U.S. Marshal's Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force.
Subsequent legal proceedings saw the charges against Marquas Gregg dropped in March 2024 due to insufficient evidence. In July 2025, a jury found Camari Warren not guilty on all six charges against him, which included first-degree murder and conspiracy. Prosecutors had alleged that Warren orchestrated the attack, while another man, Cameron Brown, was the one who fired the shots.
Cameron Brown's trial took place in October 2025. During the trial, a key witness for the prosecution testified that Brown had admitted to the shooting. However, Brown's defense team argued that there was no physical evidence placing him at the scene. Ultimately, the jury found Cameron Brown not guilty of first-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The jury was deadlocked on a third charge of malicious shooting into an occupied vehicle. Following the verdict, the Norfolk Commonwealth's Attorney stated his intention to retry Brown on the deadlocked charge.
