In the Huntersville neighborhood of Norfolk, Virginia, on a Tuesday, the 15th of November in 2011, the life of 21-year-old Darelle J. Williams was cut short. That day, Williams was discovered in the 800 block of A Avenue, suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite being rushed to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, the young man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting death of the male Norfolk resident led authorities to a suspect.
Javontay Jones was arrested in connection with the killing. Investigators believed that an altercation between Jones and Williams had escalated, resulting in the fatal shooting. This violent incident raised concerns about gun violence within the community.
Javontay Jones was subsequently charged with first-degree murder for his role in Darelle Williams' death. In August of 2015, the case against him concluded with a bench trial. The court found Jones guilty of the charges brought against him. For the murder of Darelle Williams, he was sentenced to 53 years in prison, with 20 of those years suspended. This left him with a sentence of 33 years of active incarceration.
