In the late summer of 2022, the life of 21-year-old Jaquan White was cut short by gun violence in his hometown of Portsmouth, Virginia. A resident of the city his entire life, he was known as a nice and lovable person who was deeply devoted to his family, especially his sisters and brothers. He had recently received a promotion at his job at the Hampton Inn and was enthusiastic about the new opportunities it presented.
On September 3, 2022, an altercation on South Street and Green Street escalated into a fatal shooting. Reports indicate that White had arranged to engage in a physical fight with 22-year-old Jonathan Thomas. It is believed that both men were armed but had agreed to set their weapons aside for the fight. During the confrontation, a third individual, identified as 22-year-old Marc Davis, arrived at the scene and opened fire. White was struck and killed, and an 18-year-old male was also injured in the incident.
In the days that followed, the Portsmouth Police Department launched an investigation and identified Davis and Thomas as suspects. Warrants were issued for their arrests in connection with White's death. Davis is facing a charge of first-degree murder, while Thomas has been charged with second-degree murder.
