On a day that began like any other in Saginaw, Michigan, the life of Anthony Augusta Cannon Jr., a 34-year-old Black male, was tragically cut short. Known affectionately to his loved ones as 'Lil Ant, Kunta, and The Black Man, he passed away on March 5, 2018. His death was the result of a domestic dispute that escalated to a fatal shooting at a residence on Genesee Street.
Anthony was a man of many passions. He was a professional boxer who had won the Middleweight Golden Gloves State Championship in 2004 and continued in the sport professionally until 2009. His love for the open road was evident through his membership in several motorcycle clubs, including the Gorilla Unlimited Motorcycle Club and previously the Ruff Ryders. Beyond his tough exterior, he had a deep appreciation for African literature and history and was known for engaging in profound conversations. A devoted son, a loving father, and a protective brother, his loyalty to those he cared about was unwavering.
The investigation into Anthony's death quickly focused on his girlfriend, Hazel Cooper. The State Police identified her as the primary suspect in the shooting that occurred during their altercation. Following the investigation, Hazel Cooper was arrested and faced serious charges for her role in the death of her boyfriend.
Hazel Cooper was charged with second-degree murder and felony firearm possession. In the legal proceedings that followed, she chose to plead no contest to the charges brought against her.
