In the summer of 2014, the life of 34-year-old Damon Ratcliff, a Black male, was tragically cut short in Saginaw, Michigan. On the evening of July 5th, Ratcliff was found suffering from a gunshot wound inside a vehicle at the intersection of 11th and Annesley streets. He was rushed to Covenant HealthCare, but tragically succumbed to his injuries.
Originally from McComb, Mississippi, Ratcliff had made Saginaw his home for many years. He was known as a hardworking man and a loving father, and his sudden and violent death sent shockwaves through his community, leaving his family and friends devastated.
The Saginaw Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation. Their efforts led them to identify a suspect, Vincent B. Martin. An arrest warrant was issued, and Martin was taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with open murder and felony firearm possession in connection with Ratcliff's death.
Vincent B. Martin's case proceeded to trial in Saginaw County Circuit Court. During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence and witness testimony to build their case against him. The jury ultimately found Martin guilty of the lesser charge of second-degree murder, as well as felony firearm possession.
Following his conviction, Vincent B. Martin was sentenced for his role in the death of Damon Ratcliff. The court ordered him to serve a lengthy prison sentence, ensuring that he would be held accountable for the violent act that ended a man's life and irrevocably altered the lives of those who knew and loved him. The conviction brought a measure of closure to Ratcliff's grieving family, though the pain of their loss remains.
