A quiet Sunday evening on December 1, 2019, turned into a scene of unimaginable terror for the Neal family in Comstock Township, Michigan. Christopher Ryan Lee Neal, a 22-year-old male, was at home with his wife and young child when an intruder broke into their residence. In a final act of love and protection, Neal urged his wife to flee with their child to safety as he confronted the armed man who had invaded their home.
While his wife and child hid in another room and called 911,
Christopher was taken hostage. The situation escalated rapidly, and before a full SWAT team could be assembled, a gunshot echoed from within the house. Law enforcement officers from the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, and Michigan State Police made the courageous decision to enter the home to save lives. Upon entry, they were met with a barrage of gunfire from the suspect. In the exchange, three officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Tragically, Christopher Ryan Lee Neal was found deceased inside his home. His wife and child were physically unharmed.
The suspect, identified as William Paul Jones, was apprehended after attempting to flee the residence. It was later revealed that Jones had an extensive criminal history and had been released from jail only five days prior to the deadly home invasion. The attack on the Neal family appeared to be a random act of violence.
Christopher Neal, originally from Quinlan, Texas, was a U.S. Navy veteran who had served as an Aviation Electronics Technician. After his time in the service, he and his wife, whom he met while they were both in Navy A School, had recently moved to Michigan. At the time of his death, they were expecting their second child. Those who knew him remembered his kind heart and unwavering devotion to his family.
