In the late hours of March 23, 2024, a report of a traffic crash on the 900 block of Jackson Street in Kalamazoo, Michigan, led to a grim discovery. First responders arrived at the scene just after 11:30 p.m. to find 25-year-old Bader Mohamed Farwana inside his vehicle. It was quickly apparent that this was no ordinary car accident; Farwana was suffering from a gunshot wound.
Despite immediate life-saving efforts, the young man succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The investigation into the male victim's death swiftly shifted from a traffic incident to a homicide. Detectives with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety worked to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting. Their investigation revealed that Farwana was the victim of an attempted robbery that ended in his tragic death. For over a month, the case unfolded as authorities searched for the person responsible for cutting a young life short, a life that included a one-year-old daughter.
A significant breakthrough in the case came on April 26, 2024, when police arrested 19-year-old Khymarus Joteige Pratt. He was subsequently charged with open murder and a felony firearm offense in connection with Farwana's death. The judicial process moved forward, and on May 6, 2025, Pratt, then 20, entered a guilty plea to felony murder and the associated firearm charge. This plea was part of an agreement that brought a resolution to the case without a full trial. In June 2025, a judge sentenced Pratt to a term of 27 to 60 years in prison for his role in the killing.
