In the spring of 2014, the life of 13-year-old Michael Day was tragically cut short in the Edison Neighborhood of Kalamazoo, Michigan. On the evening of May 26th, the young male was fatally wounded by a shotgun blast, a violent act that would later be described as a grim chapter in a cycle of retaliatory gang violence. The incident sent ripples of shock and grief through the local community.
The investigation into Michael's death moved swiftly, and within a week, authorities had their
first suspect in custody, a 15-year-old who would be charged as an adult. Shortly after, two more individuals, 18-year-old Rashid Perez and 23-year-old Octavius Snell, were also apprehended. All three faced serious charges, including open murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and felony firearm possession, painting a stark picture of the collaborative nature of the crime.
The legal proceedings that followed would stretch on for years, marked by convictions and appeals. The shooter was identified as Victor Garay, who was 15 at the time of the incident. In 2015, Garay was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. However, this was not the final chapter in the legal saga. In 2017, the Michigan Court of Appeals reversed his sentence, citing that his age had not been adequately considered. This led to a resentencing in 2022, where Garay was given a term of 40-60 years in prison, offering a measure of closure to a case that had long haunted the community.
