In a tragic turn of events on the night of August 9, 2015, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, a heated argument culminated in the death of Edward Bell. The dispute involved George Mack, the ex-boyfriend of Bell's sister, Erica Bell. The confrontation took place outside Erica Bell's home on North Rose Street.
Following the initial argument, Mack left the residence, only to return shortly after armed with a semi-automatic rifle.
In an act of selfless bravery, Edward Bell pushed his sister out of the line of fire as Mack opened fire. Bell was struck multiple times and died at the scene. At the time of the shooting, Mack was already out on bond for a domestic assault case.
Immediately after the shooting, a manhunt for George Mack was launched, with law enforcement describing him as armed and dangerous. The search for Mack extended beyond Michigan, and he was eventually apprehended by U.S. Marshals in Las Vegas on August 17, 2015. He was then extradited back to Kalamazoo to face charges related to the death of Edward Bell.
George Mack, who was 26 years old at the time, stood trial for the murder of Edward Bell. In November 2016, a Kalamazoo County jury found him guilty of first-degree murder after a week-long trial. In addition to the murder charge, Mack was also convicted of felony firearm, felon in possession of a firearm, and aggravated stalking. The jury deliberated for less than four hours before reaching their verdict. Subsequently, Judge Alexander Lipsey sentenced George Mack to life in prison for the murder of Edward Bell.
