In the spring of 2017, the community of Louisville, Kentucky, was shaken by the untimely death of Lamont Ray Pillows, a 42-year-old Black male known affectionately as 'Ray Ray.' On the night of April 29th, Pillows was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the Limerick neighborhood, specifically in the 1100 block of South 8th Street near West St. Catherine Street. The shooting was reported just after 11 p.m., and though he was quickly transported to University Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
Pillows was a beloved figure in his neighborhood. At the time of his death, he was eagerly planning a party for one of the city's most celebrated events, the Kentucky Derby, intending to bring his neighbors together for a joyous occasion. In the wake of the tragedy, those who knew him remembered him as a good person, and a memorial of flowers and balloons soon appeared at the site of the shooting, a poignant tribute to a life cut short just yards from his home.
The Louisville Metro Police Department promptly opened a homicide investigation into the shooting of Lamont Pillows. Despite their efforts and public appeals for information, the case has remained unsolved for years. As of early 2024, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified in connection with his death. The investigation is ongoing, and Pillows' case is officially listed as an open homicide, leaving his family and community still waiting for answers and justice.
