On a summer evening in Lexington, Kentucky, the life of 40-year-old Tyrece Clark, a Black male, was cut short by gunfire. The fatal encounter unfolded on July 23, 2017, at the Day's Motel on Versailles Road. Police responded to the scene around 9:18 p.m. and found Clark with multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries just after 11 p.m.
that same night.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to an attempted robbery gone tragically wrong. It was determined that Jemel Barber, who was 18 years old at the time, had gone to the motel with the intention of robbing Clark of drugs and money. When Barber, armed with a rifle, knocked on the door of the motel room, a shootout ensued. Barber claimed that Clark fired first, prompting him to return fire in self-defense, ultimately leading to Clark's death. Witnesses at the motel reported seeing three males fleeing the scene in a black pickup truck after the shooting. Police believed that the suspects and Clark were acquainted with each other.
In the days following the shooting, arrests were made in connection with the case. Jemel Barber was charged with murder and first-degree robbery. Another man, 23-year-old Durease Richards, was also taken into custody and charged with facilitation to commit murder. Richards was identified as the driver of the getaway vehicle. A third suspect was also sought by law enforcement.
The legal process for Jemel Barber concluded in February 2022. After a plea agreement, his initial charges of murder and first-degree robbery were reduced. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter and second-degree robbery. Despite his claims of self-defense, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in the death of Tyrece Clark. The case of Durease Richards also moved through the court system, where he initially faced charges for his involvement in the incident.
