In the early morning hours of November 20, 2020, in downtown Lexington, Kentucky, the life of 24-year-old Akeem Lee Lyvers, a male, was tragically cut short. Near the 21C Hotel, the sound of gunshots shattered the pre-dawn stillness. When police arrived at the scene on Wrenn Court, they discovered Lyvers suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was rushed to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, but tragically, he did not survive.
For weeks, the shadow of Akeem's unsolved murder hung over the city. Investigators worked diligently, gathering evidence and speaking with witnesses who were present at the time of the shooting. Their efforts led them to identify 24-year-old Raekwon Burse as the primary suspect. On December 18, 2020, the Lexington Police Department publicly named Burse and warned that he should be considered armed and dangerous. The search for Burse intensified, culminating in his apprehension in January 2021, a collaboration between the Lexington police and U.S. Marshals.
Raekwon Burse was initially charged with the murder of Akeem Lyvers. In addition to this grave accusation, he faced a litany of other serious charges, including being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, receiving a stolen gun, and multiple drug trafficking offenses. The case against him appeared formidable, and the justice system began its slow and deliberate process. However, the path to a murder trial took an unexpected turn. In a development that reshaped the legal landscape of the case, Burse entered into a plea agreement. He pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of second-degree manslaughter. As a result of this plea deal, the other charges, including the murder charge and the numerous drug offenses, were dismissed. Ultimately, Raekwon Burse was sentenced to eight years in prison for his role in the death of Akeem Lee Lyvers.
