On a Sunday afternoon in Lexington, Kentucky, a car was found stopped in the middle of Kenton Street. Inside were two men, both suffering from gunshot wounds to the head. The driver was screaming for help, and neighbors quickly called the police. The victims were identified as 29-year-old Jerry Waugh and 27-year-old Jerrod Vice. Both were rushed to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital.
Jerry Waugh, a father to a son and twin daughters, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced
dead at 2 a.m. the following Monday, September 20, 2010. Police immediately began investigating the shooting as a homicide. It was believed that the two men had been shot elsewhere before driving to Kenton Street.
The surviving victim, Jerrod Vice, was able to identify the shooter to the police. According to Vice, he had arranged to sell drugs to a man he knew as 'D'. When the man, later identified as Darnell Eugene Farrier, got into the car, he immediately shot Waugh and then demanded money and a cell phone from Vice. After Vice complied, Farrier shot him as well before fleeing the scene.
Using cell phone records to track him down, police arrested 29-year-old Darnell Eugene Farrier four days after the shooting. He was charged with murder, first-degree assault, and first-degree robbery. Farrier's attorney initially claimed self-defense, but he later pleaded guilty to murder in the death of Jerry Waugh and assault on Jerrod Vice. In March 2014, Darnell Eugene Farrier was sentenced to 38 years in prison for his crimes.
