In the summer of 2017, a neighborhood dispute in Lexington, Kentucky, escalated to a fatal confrontation, ending the life of 29-year-old Austin T. Murphy. On the afternoon of July 31st, residents of Greenleaf Drive were startled by a loud boom that echoed through the street. Shortly after, police responded to a call about a fight involving a weapon and discovered Murphy outside a home, having sustained a fatal shotgun wound.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led to a suspect.
Curtis Flora, a 65-year-old man who lived on the same street, identified himself to detectives as the shooter. Flora admitted to being involved in an ongoing dispute with Murphy, who was a frequent visitor at his girlfriend's home across the street. Witnesses reported seeing Flora with the gun. Following his confession, Flora was arrested and charged with murder.
In the wake of his death, friends and family gathered for a vigil to remember Murphy, described as a good man with a smile that could brighten anyone's day. He was a father to a daughter and had been in a long-term relationship with his girlfriend. At a court appearance following the incident, a not guilty plea was entered on Flora's behalf. The case was ultimately cleared by arrest, leaving a community to grapple with the violent end to a neighborhood disagreement.
