In the early hours of a cold winter morning in Washington, D.C., the life of 18-year-old Chicano Phillips, a Black male, was irrevocably altered. On Friday, February 16, 2018, at approximately 1:02 a.m., violence erupted inside a residence in the 4200 block of 7th Street, Southeast. An unknown gunman burst into the apartment where Phillips and a group of others were present and opened fire.
Amid the chaos and gunfire, a harrowing scene unfolded.
A friend of Phillips, who was present during the attack, later recounted hiding in a back room until the shooting ceased. When she emerged, she found that everyone had fled except for Phillips, who had been tragically struck in the head by the gunfire. Another male teenager also sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds during the incident and later sought treatment at a local hospital.
Emergency services were called to the scene, and Phillips was rushed to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, he succumbed to his wounds two days later, on Sunday, February 18, 2018.
In the wake of the shooting, the Metropolitan Police Department launched a homicide investigation. Authorities appealed to the public for any information that might lead to the identification and arrest of the person or persons responsible for this senseless act of violence. A reward of up to $25,000 was offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrator. However, police did not immediately have a suspect or a motive in the shooting. The case remains one of the city's unsolved homicides.
