On a Thursday afternoon in October 2019, tragedy struck in the 4200 block of 6th Street, Southeast Washington, D.C., forever altering the lives of those connected to Deron 'Snoop' Leake. The 27-year-old man was in the Cascade Park Apartments, a place where he had grown up, accompanied by a close-knit group of friends who considered themselves 'blood brothers.'
The day, which had been spent together drinking and smoking, took a fatal turn following a dispute in a hallway of one of the apartment buildings.
As Leake and his friends were attempting to leave the area after the argument, gunfire erupted. Leake was struck in the head and died at the scene. Another of his friends was shot in both legs but survived his injuries. In the immediate aftermath, law enforcement arrived to find two victims of the shooting and began their investigation. A loaded handgun was reportedly found under Leake's body, and the surviving friend, who was also armed, admitted to returning fire.
The investigation into Deron Leake's death led authorities to a suspect, Davonte Brothers. In September 2020, Brothers, who was already incarcerated on other charges, was arrested and charged with the first-degree murder of Leake. The prosecution's case against Brothers was built on evidence that included surveillance footage from a DEA camera that had been monitoring the neighborhood for suspected drug-related activities. Prosecutors alleged this footage captured Brothers at the scene and fleeing in a car after the shooting.
Despite the charges and the evidence presented, the path to justice proved to be complex. During the trial, the defense raised questions about the thoroughness of the police investigation, suggesting that other potential suspects with motives to harm Leake had not been adequately looked into. A key witness for the prosecution, one of Leake’s friends who was present during the shooting, had initially been unable to identify the shooter, only to name Brothers a year later after his own arrest. Ultimately, in May 2024, a jury acquitted Devonte Brothers of all charges related to the death of Deron Leake. While acquitted in Leake's case, Brothers remained in custody facing charges in connection with a separate homicide.
