On a summer evening in Washington, D.C., a man named Derrick Black, 24 years old, lost his life in a burst of violence. The male victim was shot and killed on Thursday, July 30, 2015, at approximately 9:25 p.m. in the 3300 block of Georgia Avenue, NW. After being shot, he fell into the street and was subsequently run over by a car. The entire tragic incident was captured on a security camera.
The investigation into his death led police to a suspect, Sean Green.
Physical evidence played a crucial role in the case against him. Green's DNA was discovered on a gun magazine recovered near the scene of the crime. According to court documents, the magazine, which had a capacity for ten cartridges, contained only three when it was found. Investigators also recovered Green's cell phone at the location. Despite the evidence, Green's defense attorney argued that witness descriptions of the shooter were inconsistent. Some witnesses described a thin man with long dreadlocks, a description that did not match Green. However, another witness, a Metrobus driver, described the shooter as having a medium build and no dreadlocks.
During his interrogation with the Metropolitan Police Department, Sean Green's story changed multiple times. Initially, he denied any involvement. Later, he admitted to being at the scene and even confessed to pulling the trigger, but claimed he was forced to do so by a man he identified as 'Mike-Mike' and later as 'Man-Man.' At one point, he asked detectives if he could receive a 'pardon' in exchange for information about the real killer. Eventually, a jury found Sean Green guilty of first-degree murder while armed, assault with intent to kill, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, and unlawful possession of a firearm with a prior felony. He was subsequently sentenced to 38.5 years in prison for the murder of Derrick Black.
