On the night of January 29, 2021, in Hartford, Connecticut, 27-year-old Michael Dudley was fatally shot. The incident occurred around 9:31 p.m. in the rear lot of a Webster Street address. When police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Dudley suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by paramedics, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Dudley, a resident of Durham, was remembered by his family as a protective and caring individual.
His cousin recalled that he was a great person who looked out for his friends and family and died doing just that. Family members believe he was killed while trying to protect a friend during an altercation, though police have not released official details on the motive. Their work led them to identify a suspect, Jordan Register, who was 21 years old at the time and resided in Greenfield, Massachusetts. Within a week of the shooting, on February 4, 2021, Register was located in Springfield, Massachusetts. He was apprehended without incident by the Massachusetts State Police Fugitive Unit and the Springfield Police Department.
Register was charged with murder in connection with Michael Dudley's death. He was held as a fugitive from justice on a $1.7 million bond, awaiting extradition back to Connecticut to face the charges. For Dudley’s grieving family, the swift arrest brought a small measure of closure, though their loss remained profound. Community leaders expressed hope that the apprehension would bring some peace to the family, acknowledging that not all families in similar tragic circumstances receive such a resolution.
