On a summer afternoon in Hartford, Connecticut, a violent home invasion turned deadly, leaving 25-year-old Hispanic male Joseph Vargas-Mercado dead. The incident, which unfolded on Saturday, July 15, 2023, was a chaotic shootout that resulted from what police believe to be a targeted, and not a random, act.
The violent encounter took place inside an apartment on Maple Avenue.
Investigators believe that Vargas-Mercado, along with two other men from Philadelphia, Carlos Frank-Nieves and Elexer Orta, were involved in a home invasion and attempted robbery. During the commission of the crime, a gunfight erupted.
In the aftermath, Frank-Nieves and Vargas-Mercado were dropped off at Hartford Hospital with serious gunshot wounds. Vargas-Mercado ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. Frank-Nieves was taken into custody by police at the hospital. A third suspect, Elexer Orta, was later located and apprehended in Pennsylvania by probation officers and extradited back to Hartford to face charges.
Both Frank-Nieves and Orta have been charged with a string of serious offenses, including criminal attempt to commit murder, felony murder, and conspiracy to commit home invasion. The investigation also led to the discovery of a firearm with an obliterated serial number, a large quantity of cash, and a cash-counting machine inside the Maple Avenue apartment.
