In the early morning hours of November 23, 2022, tragedy struck in a second-floor apartment on Barker Street in Hartford, Connecticut, claiming the lives of two brothers. Jonas Deaza-Escobar, a 19-year-old Black / African American male, and his older brother, 20-year-old Cesar Deaza-Escobar, were fatally shot in what police have described as a targeted attack. The shooting occurred around 1 a.m. while the brothers were reportedly celebrating Cesar's 20th birthday.
The incident marked the 37th and 38th homicides in Hartford for that year.
Hartford police responded to a 911 call reporting the shooting and discovered both brothers inside the apartment, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency medical services were rendered at the scene, and the brothers were rushed to a local hospital. However, their injuries proved to be too severe, and both were pronounced dead shortly after their arrival. Investigators believe that the perpetrator, or perpetrators, gained entry to the residence through a rear entrance.
In the wake of the devastating loss, the family of Jonas and Cesar Deaza-Escobar, alongside community organizations such as Mothers United Against Violence, gathered for vigils to honor their memory and plead for an end to gun violence. They expressed profound grief and a desperate search for answers as to why the two young men were killed. Despite the ongoing investigation, which has involved canvassing the neighborhood, reviewing surveillance footage, and interviewing potential witnesses, no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with the double homicide. The motive behind the targeted shooting remains unclear as the Hartford Police Department continues its investigation and urges anyone with information to come forward.
