In the early morning hours of December 20, 2014, a tragic event unfolded in Hartford, Connecticut, that would cut short the life of 23-year-old Hispanic male, Hiram Sito Martinez. He was in a car with another man, Dederick Jiminez, near Colt Park when the promise of a new day was shattered by the sound of gunfire around 5:30 a.m. The shooting left Martinez with fatal injuries and Jiminez wounded.
The incident was not a random act of violence but was rooted in a cycle of retaliation.
Just six days prior, on December 14, a man named Mariano "Papa" Gonzalez had been murdered in Hartford. Authorities suspected Martinez of being involved in Gonzalez's death. This suspicion would prove to have deadly consequences for the young man.
Following the shooting, an investigation was launched, and the surviving victim, Dederick Jiminez, provided crucial information to the police. He identified the shooter as a man he knew as "Pipone." This individual was later identified as 37-year-old Tyrone Rosa. Jiminez testified that Rosa was a close friend of the recently slain Mariano Gonzalez. He also revealed that Martinez had admitted to him that he had killed Gonzalez.
The motive became clear: Rosa had sought revenge for his friend's murder. On that fateful morning, Rosa was in the backseat of the car with Martinez and Jiminez. After directing Jiminez to drive to Hendricxsen Avenue and park near a vacant lot, Rosa opened fire on both men. Martinez succumbed to a gunshot wound to his head, while Jiminez was shot in the shoulder and elbow but survived. In February 2017, Tyrone Rosa was convicted of murder for the killing of Hiram Martinez and the wounding of Dederick Jiminez, bringing a legal conclusion to the violent chapter that claimed a young life in an act of retaliatory street justice.
