On a late Friday morning, November 25, 2016, the life of 27-year-old Hispanic male Jaime Rivera was tragically cut short in Hartford, Connecticut. Reports of gunfire near the intersection of Maple Avenue and Bond Street prompted a police response around 10:54 a.m. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Rivera in the front yard of a residence at 198 Bond Street, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to Hartford Hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into Rivera's death led authorities to identify a suspect, Headley Thomas, who was 28 years old at the time. Through numerous interviews and the review of surveillance footage from the area, detectives determined Thomas was the individual responsible for the shooting. It is believed that the incident stemmed from a drug deal, and police noted that the area was known for a high volume of crime and drug-related activities. Inside the silver Buick Century where Rivera was shot, police found drugs.
An arrest warrant for Headley Thomas on charges of murder and criminal possession of a firearm was issued on December 14, 2016, with a bond set at $1.5 million. However, Thomas had fled the area in an effort to evade capture. For months, law enforcement searched for him. The U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force developed information that Thomas had escaped to St. Petersburg, Florida. On Tuesday, May 9, 2017, at approximately 9:30 a.m., authorities located and apprehended Thomas in the 800 block of 15th St. S. in St. Petersburg. He was taken into custody and held in the Pinellas County jail on a fugitive from justice charge, pending his extradition back to Hartford to face arraignment for the murder of Jaime Rivera.
