In the early hours of August 4, 2020, the vibrant energy within a makeshift nightclub in Hartford, Connecticut, turned to terror. Kennedy Burgess, a 28-year-old Black male, was among approximately 50 people gathered inside a warehouse at 818 Windsor Street in the city's north end. At around 1:28 a.m., the unsanctioned event was shattered by the sound of gunfire.
Chaos erupted as bullets flew, striking multiple people in the crowded space.
When the shooting stopped, six individuals were wounded. Kennedy Burgess was critically injured and rushed to Hartford Hospital. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after 2 a.m. The Hartford Police Department's Major Crimes and Crime Scene Division descended on the warehouse, a large building subdivided into smaller units, to begin the arduous task of piecing together what had happened. They recovered numerous casings and other evidence from the scene of the handgun shooting.
In the days and weeks that followed, the investigation into Burgess's death struggled to gain traction. No immediate arrests were made, and information regarding any potential suspects was not disclosed to the public. The lack of leads left the case open and created a painful void for Burgess's family, which included his five children.
The investigation later uncovered a grim connection to a cycle of retaliatory violence. In June 2021, while interviewing a suspect in a separate fatal shooting, police learned of a potential motive. The suspect revealed that his father had been murdered in apparent retaliation for Burgess's killing. This disclosure painted a broader, more violent picture surrounding the incident but did not lead to an arrest in Burgess's case. As of now, no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in the death of Kennedy Burgess. The case remains an open investigation with the Hartford Police Department.
