On a summer night in Hartford, Connecticut, the life of 29-year-old Troy Reid, a Black / African American male, was cut short by gunfire. On August 9, 2021, at approximately 11:20 p.m., Hartford police responded to a report of a shooting at a residence on Sterling Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered Reid inside a vehicle parked behind the building, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene shortly after 11:30 p.m.
At the scene of the crime, police apprehended a suspect without incident. The individual taken into custody was identified as 35-year-old Tanoah Jones of Augusta, Georgia. Jones was subsequently arrested and charged with murder in connection with Reid's death.
The investigation into the shooting was handled by the Hartford Police Major Crime and Crime Scene Divisions. In addition to the murder charge, Jones faced several other charges, including three counts of risk of injury to a minor, carrying a pistol without a permit, and possession of a high-capacity magazine. The charges related to risk of injury to a minor suggested that children may have been present during the incident. Jones was held on a $2 million bond. While authorities confirmed that Jones was cooperating with the ongoing investigation, the motive for the shooting was not immediately disclosed.
