On a late morning in May, 59-year-old Guillermo Gonzalez, a Hispanic male, was standing outside a bodega on Zion Street in Hartford, Connecticut, not far from his home. It was around 11:45 a.m. on May 10, 2022, and he was simply minding his own business when the sound of gunfire suddenly filled the air. Tragically, he was struck by a bullet in what police would later describe as a senseless act of violence where he was not the intended target.
First responders rushed to the scene and transported him to a nearby hospital, but his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation that followed revealed a chaotic scene had unfolded on the street that day. Detectives determined that the gunshots erupted from a passing vehicle that was actively chasing another car. Security footage from the area captured the incident, showing multiple rounds being fired during the pursuit. In the midst of this violence, Mr. Gonzalez was caught in the crossfire. His family was left shattered by the sudden and random loss, remembering him as an innocent victim who was getting food near his home, with his wife nearby at the time of the shooting. In the days that followed, loved ones gathered for a vigil to remember him and to call for an end to the violence that had taken his life.
Investigators from the Hartford Police Department's Major Crimes and Crime Scene Divisions worked the case, eventually identifying a suspect. An arrest warrant was issued for 23-year-old Jose Estrada of Hartford. On October 5, 2022, police located and arrested Estrada. He was subsequently charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, two counts of criminal attempt at murder, and reckless endangerment for his alleged role in the drive-by shooting that claimed the life of an innocent bystander.
