The Hispanic infant boy and his 20-year-old mother, Jessiah Mercado, were fatally wounded in what police described as a targeted drive-by shooting. A third individual in the vehicle with them, a man in his 20s, sustained non-life-threatening injuries, while the driver was unharmed.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly pointed to a suspect, 23-year-old Lance "Macho" Morales of Waterbury. Authorities believe the motive for the shooting stemmed from an ongoing dispute over a car between Morales and Jessiah Mercado. Police identified Morales after reviewing surveillance footage and receiving tips from the public. He was considered armed and dangerous, and a manhunt was initiated. His last known vehicle was a white Infiniti Q70 with Massachusetts license plates, which was later found abandoned in Waterbury.
Following an intense search, Lance Morales was apprehended by U.S. Marshals in Puerto Rico. He was found in the Fardo region of the island and taken into custody. Morales was charged as a fugitive from justice and faced extradition back to Connecticut to answer for the killings. The charges against him are extensive, including two counts of murder, murder with special circumstances, first-degree assault, and criminal possession of a firearm. His bond was set at $3 million.
