In the early hours of August 3, 2019, Hartford police responded to a ShotSpotter alert indicating gunfire near 279 Farmington Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered 23-year-old Roberto Vargas suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was promptly transported to Saint Francis Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, marking Hartford's 18th homicide of the year.
