Randi Jermaine Gunn, a 43-year-old Black male, tragically lost his life on July 30, 2024, in Hartford, Connecticut. On that evening, around 7:15 p.m., the city's ShotSpotter system detected nine rounds of gunfire in the 600 block of Garden Street. Responding officers discovered an unresponsive Gunn at the scene, suffering from five gunshot wounds to his torso, legs, and arm.
Despite an officer's attempt to apply pressure to his wounds, and being rushed to Saint Francis Hospital, he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting quickly revealed that the incident was preceded by a heated verbal altercation. The entire confrontation and subsequent shooting were captured by a privately-owned surveillance camera. The footage reportedly showed Gunn challenging the suspect, who was in a car, to get out and shoot him. The suspect, identified as 53-year-old Marcus "Solo" Arnold of Manchester, allegedly fired through the rear passenger side window of his vehicle, striking Gunn multiple times. Investigators found eight spent casings and two bullet fragments at the scene. A relative of Gunn's who witnessed the shooting only knew the suspect by his nickname, "Solo."
Authorities believe the dispute stemmed from the fact that both Gunn and Arnold were in a relationship with the same woman, which had created tension between them. In a twist, it was reported that the woman involved had called the police earlier that day to report Gunn's whereabouts, as he was wanted on domestic violence charges. Thanks to the surveillance footage and witness information, police were able to identify and apprehend Arnold in Manchester just seven hours after the shooting. He was subsequently charged with murder and held on a $2 million bond.
Known for his vibrant and bold personality, Randi Gunn was remembered by his family as a generous and loving man who was the life of the party. One of twelve boys and four girls, he was described as a family man who was always smiling and would give his last dollar to a relative in need. In his younger years, he was known for his flamboyant style, but later in life, he embraced his role as a proud father to his daughter. His family expressed both devastation over their loss and gratitude for the swift arrest of the suspect, seeking justice for a life taken too soon.
