On the night of May 19, 2022, Daryl Walker, a 25-year-old Black man from Bloomfield, Connecticut, was driving through Hartford with a friend. The evening took a tragic turn when shots rang out in the 100 block of Zion Street, striking both Walker and his passenger. The incident began around 10 p.m., a time when the city was otherwise settling into a calm Thursday night.
The sharp sound of gunfire triggered the city's ShotSpotter system, immediately alerting the Hartford police to the violence that had just erupted.
In a desperate attempt to flee the scene and get help, Walker sped away in his vehicle. Gravely wounded, he drove eastward down Ward Street, where the situation quickly escalated. He lost control of the car, first colliding with a parked vehicle before striking a police cruiser that was responding to the area. The chaotic sequence ended when the car crashed directly into the Hartford Police substation located at 134 Affleck Street. Officers who rushed to the scene discovered both Walker and his passenger inside the wrecked car, each suffering from serious gunshot wounds. They were both rushed to a local hospital for emergency medical treatment.
At the hospital, despite the efforts of medical staff, Daryl Walker succumbed to his injuries. His passenger, a man in his 20s, survived and was listed in stable condition. The Hartford Police Major Crimes and Crime Scene Divisions launched an intensive investigation into what they believed was a targeted shooting. For months, the case progressed as Walker's family and community mourned his loss, holding vigils and calling for an end to the violence that had claimed his life.
More than a year and a half later, a breakthrough in the investigation brought a measure of hope for justice. On December 14, 2023, authorities announced the arrest of a suspect. Daniel White, a 32-year-old Hartford resident, was identified as the man responsible for the shooting. He had been located and arrested in Virginia on charges unrelated to Walker's death. After being extradited back to Connecticut, White was formally charged with murder, first-degree assault, and criminal liability for his role in the events of that fatal May night. He was held on a $1.5 million bond, marking a significant development in the long journey for accountability in the death of Daryl Walker.
