In the early hours of a Saturday in Hartford, Connecticut, the sound of gunfire pierced the quiet of the city’s north end. On March 19, 2016, 28-year-old Jeffery Vail, a Black male, was sitting in a car on Martin Street with his companion, 33-year-old William Ward. At approximately 2 a.m., an unknown assailant approached the vehicle and opened fire, unleashing a volley of bullets that shattered the pre-dawn stillness.
The city’s ShotSpotter system detected the gunfire, alerting the
Hartford Police Department to the scene. Arriving officers discovered both Vail and Ward inside the car, suffering from critical injuries. Emergency medical services rushed the two men to Saint Francis Hospital, but their wounds proved fatal. Vail had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his upper torso, and both he and Ward were pronounced deceased by emergency room doctors shortly after their arrival. Both men were residents of Hartford.
Detectives from the Major Crimes Division immediately launched an investigation into the double homicide, establishing a crime scene on Martin Street. Despite their efforts, an initial search of the area for a suspect was unsuccessful. At the time, police had not identified any persons of interest and made no immediate arrests.
In the days that followed, the Hartford Police Department continued to investigate, following several leads in an attempt to bring those responsible for the deaths of Jeffery Vail and William Ward to justice. They appealed to the public for assistance, asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or had any information to come forward. However, reports from the time of the incident and in the years since have not publicly identified any suspects or announced any arrests in connection with the murders. The investigation into the double homicide remains ongoing.
