On January 5, 1957, Bernard "Buster" Speyer and his wife, Ruth, both residents of Meriden, Connecticut, visited a shoe store in East Haven. Unbeknownst to them, the store was being targeted by two notorious criminals: Joseph "Mad Dog" Taborsky and his accomplice, Arthur "Meatball" Culombe. Earlier that day, Taborsky had entered the store under the pretense of purchasing size 12 shoes.
