In the early hours of a Monday morning, on September 27, 2021, the life of 16-year-old Wildemar Santiago was tragically cut short on Martin Street in Hartford, Connecticut. A freshman at Weaver High School, the young man was attending a memorial for a friend who had been slain on the very same street just a month prior. It was there, on the sidewalk, that he was fatally shot.
Police believe the shooter was in a passing car.
Officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert indicating gunfire around 1 a.m. and discovered Wildemar with gunshot wounds. Emergency medical aid was administered at the scene before he was transported to a local hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. His death marked the city's 28th homicide of the year, sparking an outcry from community members and leaders who gathered to call for an end to the pervasive gun violence that had claimed yet another young life. The school district mobilized a crisis intervention team to provide support and counseling to students and staff affected by the loss.
The investigation into the shooting continued, and a suspect was eventually identified. In March 2022, Hartford police announced the arrest of 31-year-old Jose Cajigas in connection with Wildemar's death. Cajigas was already incarcerated for a separate incident in which he allegedly shot at a Hartford police officer in October 2021. He was charged with murder and criminal possession of a firearm for the September slaying of the teenager.
