In the spring of 1999, a dedicated Chandler, Arizona police officer, James Robert Snedigar, a 38-year-old Caucasian male, found himself in a volatile and dangerous situation that would tragically end his life. On April 16th, Snedigar, a five-year veteran of the force, was part of a SWAT team operation responding to a high-stakes scenario involving armed robbery suspects.
The individuals had reportedly robbed a jewelry store in the neighboring city of Tempe and had subsequently fled, seeking refuge in an apartment complex located at 1100 N. Priest Drive in Chandler. There, they forcibly entered an apartment and barricaded themselves inside, creating a tense standoff with law enforcement.
As the point man for the SWAT team's entry, Officer Snedigar was at the forefront of the effort to apprehend the suspects. The team deployed stun grenades in an attempt to disorient the individuals inside before making their move. However, as they breached the doorway, they were immediately met with gunfire from within the apartment. In the initial volley of shots, Snedigar was struck in the face. Despite wearing body armor, the location of the wound proved to be fatal.
The other officers on the scene immediately returned fire, and in the ensuing exchange, one of the suspects, who was also wearing a bulletproof vest, was killed. The remaining two suspects inside the apartment were subsequently apprehended and taken into custody. Officer James Robert Snedigar's death marked a somber moment for the Chandler Police Department, as he was the first officer in the department's history to be killed in the line of duty. His sacrifice left a lasting impact on the community and his department.
