In the summer of 2010, a dedicated police officer's life was tragically cut short during a dangerous undercover operation. Carlos Luciano Ledesma, a 34-year-old male officer with the Chandler Police Department, was killed on July 28, 2010, in Phoenix, Arizona. A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, he had served with the department for three years, leaving behind a wife and two children.
The fatal incident unfolded when Detective Ledesma and two other undercover detectives arranged to sell a large
quantity of marijuana to a group of individuals at a Phoenix home. As the officers arrived to complete the transaction, they were ambushed by the suspects who came out and immediately opened fire. Detective Ledesma was mortally wounded in the ensuing shootout. His two fellow officers were also injured but managed to return fire, killing two of the assailants at the scene.
In the aftermath of the violent encounter, a complex investigation led to the apprehension of multiple suspects. Initially, six individuals were taken into custody. The case would unfold over more than a decade, with several conspirators eventually facing justice for their roles in the deadly ambush. In 2017, three men, including Doarnell Jackson, Thandika Singleton, and John Howard Webber, reached plea agreements. Jackson pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and conspiracy to possess marijuana for sale and was sentenced to 30 years in prison, while the other two received 20-year sentences.
The final two defendants, Corey Royalty and Jerry Cockhearn, were brought to justice years later. In May 2022, a jury found both men guilty on multiple felony counts, including first-degree murder. On July 12, 2022, Royalty, then 51, was sentenced to 43 years to life in prison, and Cockhearn, 37, received a sentence of 38 years to life, bringing a long-awaited conclusion for the family and colleagues of the fallen officer.
