In a tragic turn of events on the evening of March 10, 2024, 16-year-old Jaylan Montrell Collins, a Black male from Queen Creek, was fatally shot at the Snedigar Sportsplex in Chandler, Arizona. The incident unfolded around 9 p.m. near the northwest end of the park, where police responded to reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they discovered three teenage victims who had been shot.
Collins was pronounced dead at the scene.
The two other victims, both 17 years old from San Tan Valley, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Investigators believe the shooting occurred between two groups of people who were acquainted with each other, leading authorities to state that it was an isolated incident with no broader danger to the public. A vehicle with several bullet holes was towed from the scene as part of the ongoing investigation.
Following the shooting, the Chandler Police Department identified a suspect in the case. Javion Keandre Brown, 19 years old, was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting. Brown faces several serious charges, including first-degree murder and aggravated robbery, and was booked into jail. The community has since come together to support the family of Jaylan Collins, the youngest son of Jesse and Tanesha, through a fundraiser to assist them during this difficult period.
