In the winter of 2016, a young man's life was tragically cut short on a street in Chandler, Arizona. Twenty-year-old Dominic Vega was fatally shot on the night of December 21st. The incident occurred near Ray Road and Arizona Avenue, where police responded to multiple calls reporting gunfire. Upon their arrival, they discovered Vega, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
He leaves behind a son and a girlfriend.
In the immediate aftermath, family and friends gathered to create a memorial of candles and prayed for answers. They described Vega as someone who did not have any known enemies, leaving them to wonder if the act was a senseless, random attack or if he had been specifically targeted. The family pleaded with the public for any information that could lead to the capture of those responsible for his death.
Investigators began their search for the suspect or suspects who fled the scene in a four-door passenger vehicle, described as a gold or champagne-colored 1990s Toyota sedan with black steel wheels and black side-view mirrors. Surveillance footage from a nearby convenience store showed Vega speaking with someone in a Toyota Camry just moments before the shooting. It was reported that the suspect vehicle followed Vega as he walked across the street. The assailant then fired multiple shots from the car. After initially driving away, the vehicle turned around, and the shooter exited the car to fire several more times at Vega.
Less than a month later, an arrest was made in connection with the homicide. Chris Anthony Vega was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder. He was subsequently booked into the Maricopa County Jail. Despite sharing the same last name, law enforcement officials confirmed that the suspect and the victim were not related.
