On November 21, 2024, 25-year-old Nasif Shykem Bowie was fatally shot during a 'Friendsgiving' gathering in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The incident occurred near Houston and Congress, where Bowie and others had assembled to celebrate the holiday season. During the event, a dispute arose over missing money, leading to a tragic escalation.
According to reports, 31-year-old Kwon Burdine accused attendees of stealing his cash, which he claimed to have recently won.
In response, Burdine allegedly locked the doors, insisting that no one could leave until the money was returned. The situation intensified, culminating in Burdine producing a firearm and discharging it multiple times. Bowie was struck and succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while another individual sustained serious injuries but survived.
Law enforcement officials recovered nine 9mm shell casings at the scene, along with Burdine's driver's license and fingerprints on a tequila bottle, linking him to the crime. He was apprehended on November 26 by the Milwaukee Police Department Fugitive Apprehension Unit in Green Bay, where a Glock 9x19 handgun was also recovered. Burdine has been charged with first-degree reckless homicide, use of a dangerous weapon, first-degree reckless injury, and possession of a firearm by a felon. His bond was set at $200,000 during a court appearance on November 29.
In the wake of this tragedy, Bowie's family and friends have expressed profound grief. His sister, Rickell Lovley, lamented, 'He didn't deserve this. He had so many people who cared about him.' A friend, Zarieanna McCoy, remembered Bowie as having 'such a bright future,' noting his educational achievements and entrepreneurial aspirations in real estate and notary services.
A memorial service for Bowie was held on December 7, 2024, at Paradise Memorial Funeral Home in Milwaukee, where loved ones gathered to honor his memory and seek solace in their shared loss.
