In the early morning hours of February 3, 2023, violence shattered the quiet of a Capitol Heights neighborhood. Inside a home on Balboa Avenue, 21-year-old Neeko Dukes, a male resident of the area, was with at least one other person when the situation turned deadly. At approximately 2:15 a.m., police received a call reporting a shooting at the residence. When officers from the Prince George's County Police Department arrived, they discovered a grim scene.
Dukes was found inside the house, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Despite any efforts to help him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting began immediately as detectives processed the scene and spoke with witnesses. Another man was found outside the home, also suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital with injuries that were considered serious but not life-threatening. According to a surviving victim's account, the group had been in the living room when a man named Kareem Roshe Boyd suddenly reached for a handgun that was present. Boyd then allegedly shot Dukes as he sat in a chair before firing at the other individual and fleeing the residence. While the motive for the shooting remained under investigation, authorities began a search for the person responsible for the young man's death.
About a month later, investigators identified their suspect. On March 9, 2023, the police department announced the arrest of 21-year-old Kareem Roshe Boyd of Washington, D.C. He was taken into custody in the District of Columbia and faced charges of first-degree murder and other related offenses for his alleged role in the fatal shooting of Neeko Dukes. Following his arrest, Boyd was held in D.C., awaiting extradition to Prince George's County to face the charges against him. The police department asked that anyone with further information relevant to the investigation come forward.
