In the spring of 1992, the life of a young law enforcement officer was tragically cut short in Capitol Heights, Maryland. Ryan Christopher Johnson Sr., a 25-year-old male, served as a patrolman with the Prince George's County Police Department for two years. On the evening of April 16, 1992, while off-duty, Johnson was standing by his car in the 1000 block of Brooke Road after visiting a friend.
Suddenly, a tan Oldsmobile carrying two individuals pulled up beside him in what would become
a fatal robbery attempt. An exchange of gunfire ensued, during which Johnson, despite being grievously wounded, managed to return fire and strike one of his assailants. Johnson sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his throat, back, and thigh. He was rushed to a local hospital where he fought for his life for six days before succumbing to his injuries on April 22, 1992.
Within hours of the shooting, two teenage suspects were located and taken into custody. Harry M. Mayo III and Terrence Brown, both 17 years old at the time, were arrested in connection with the fatal encounter. One of the teens was being treated for a gunshot wound at a hospital in Washington D.C., an injury sustained during the shootout with Officer Johnson.
Following Johnson's death, the charges against Mayo and Brown were elevated to first-degree murder. They were charged as adults for the assault and robbery that led to the officer's untimely death. At the time of his passing, Ryan Christopher Johnson Sr. was survived by his wife and two children.
