In the summer of 2019, the life of a 23-year-old Black transgender woman, Zoe Spears, was tragically cut short on a sidewalk in Fairmount Heights, Maryland. On the morning of June 13, police responded to a call about an unresponsive person and discovered Spears, who had been fatally shot. She was pronounced dead at the scene, sparking an investigation into a crime that would deeply affect the local LGBTQ+ community.
