On an autumn afternoon, a basketball court in Fort Washington, Maryland, became the scene of a fatal encounter for 30-year-old Desmond Donnell Thomas. On October 27, 2023, Thomas was at the park on Old Fort Road to play basketball when a dispute escalated into deadly violence. He was found suffering from both gunshot and stab wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. Another man with Thomas was also shot but sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The altercation, it would later be revealed, stemmed from a baseless accusation.
The day after the incident, authorities arrested 54-year-old Kenneth Elwood Smith and his 18-year-old stepson, Lamont Scott, both of Fort Washington. The investigation determined that Thomas and his friend were unknown to the suspects. Smith had driven to the park with Scott to look for his daughter. Upon finding her, he confronted Thomas and his companion, wrongly believing they were there with his daughter. Despite their denials, a verbal altercation ensued and quickly turned physical.
During the confrontation, Lamont Scott, who was armed with a handgun, shot at Desmond Thomas twice from their vehicle. Subsequently, Kenneth Elwood Smith fatally stabbed Thomas in the back. The two then fled the scene. The investigation that followed led to their swift apprehension. Initially, Smith was charged with second-degree murder, and Scott was charged with first-degree murder.
The legal process brought convictions for both men. Kenneth Elwood Smith was ultimately convicted of first-degree murder and other counts. In November 2024, he was sentenced to 55 years in prison. His stepson, Lamont Scott, pleaded guilty to murder and received a 30-year sentence for his role in the tragic and senseless death of Desmond Donnell Thomas.
