On the evening of April 22, 2024, a burst of violence in a Dollar General parking lot on Leavenworth Road in Kansas City, Kansas, cut short the life of 22-year-old Gerald Jones II. The young Black/African American man was discovered by police with a gunshot wound around 7:30 p.m. Despite the efforts of emergency personnel who responded to the scene, Jones was pronounced dead in the parking lot of the discount store.
The investigation into the shooting death of Jones, which marked the
sixth homicide in Kansas City, Kansas for the year, quickly moved forward. In the weeks that followed, law enforcement authorities identified a suspect in connection with the fatal shooting. The U.S. Marshals Fugitive Apprehension Task Force was instrumental in locating and apprehending the individual believed to be responsible for Jones's death.
A 17-year-old male was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals on the Missouri side of Kansas City. Following his arrest, the teenager, who has not been publicly named, was charged by the Wyandotte County District Attorney's Office with first-degree felony murder and aggravated robbery. He is being held in the Jackson County Juvenile Detention Center and is awaiting extradition to Wyandotte County to face trial for his alleged role in the death of Gerald Jones II.
