On August 30, 2017, the life of 29-year-old Kevin James Fowler, a White/Caucasian male, was cut short in Kansas City, Kansas. In a house located in the 1400 block of North 75th Drive, Fowler was fatally shot in the chest. Neighbors later recounted hearing the sound of gunshots before witnessing men hastily fleeing the scene. The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division immediately launched an investigation into the apparent homicide.

in Merriam, Kansas, Kevin was a graduate of Olathe Northwest High School. He was remembered for his engaging smile and unwavering loyalty to his friends. A passionate sports enthusiast, he had played competitive baseball and soccer in his youth and was an avid fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals. He was a father to three daughters, Eva, Leyla, and Skyla.
The investigation into Fowler's death led to a significant breakthrough in September 2017. Authorities tracked a suspect, 24-year-old Zachary Barnes, to an area near the Nebraska border. The search for Barnes prompted lockdowns in the Kansas towns of Belleville and Concordia before he was ultimately apprehended south of Cuba, Kansas. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder in connection with Kevin Fowler's death and held in the Wyandotte County Detention Center.
Several months later, on January 31, 2018, a second suspect was taken into custody. Shannon Dace, a woman in her 30s, was arrested following a high-speed police chase that began in Kansas City, Missouri, and concluded in Kansas City, Kansas. Dace was wanted on a warrant for obstructing apprehension or prosecution related to Fowler's murder. During the pursuit, drugs and guns were reportedly thrown from the vehicle before she and two other individuals surrendered to police.
