In the early evening of June 4, 2020, in a Kansas City, Kansas neighborhood, the life of 26-year-old Narbu Tamang was tragically cut short. A husband and the father of a young child, Tamang was at home caring for his baby boy earlier in the day before a friend picked him up. They went to another location in the 3400 block of Barnett Avenue, where a fight reportedly broke out among a group of people.
As the altercation escalated, shots were fired.
According to a relative who spoke with a witness, Tamang attempted to flee the scene and hide when he was struck by gunfire. Just before 8 p.m., police responded to reports of the shooting and found Tamang, who had been shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The motive for the shooting remains unclear, leaving his family searching for answers in the wake of their sudden and devastating loss. Tamang was remembered as the sole provider for his ill mother and his own young family, including his sick wife.
The investigation into the shooting was conducted by the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department's criminal investigations division. Their work led to a breakthrough when a suspect was taken into custody. Subsequently, 31-year-old Tika Ram Sarki, a resident of Kansas City, Kansas, was arrested and charged in connection with the fatal shooting.
Sarki was charged in Wyandotte County District Court with second-degree murder and aggravated assault. Following his arrest, he was held in the county jail on a $175,000 bond. The community rallied around Tamang's grieving family, with a GoFundMe page organized to help with funeral expenses, raising thousands of dollars in a short period. The case was then turned over to the Wyandotte County District Attorney's Office for prosecution.
